TO PROTECT OUR KIDS FROM ILLEGAL ENCAMPMENTS
We all share the same vision: safe and clean neighborhoods where our children can grow up and thrive. A neighborhood where they can play in the park, attend school, ride bikes, walk with friends, and live without fear of being approached, accosted, or worse yet.
LAMC 41.18 is a public safety ordinance. It allows for schools, parks, and other sensitive locations to be free of surrounding homeless encampments and all the issues that come with people living on the streets. The following is directly from LAMC 41.18, "No person shall sit, lie, sleep, or store, use, maintain, or place personal property, in or upon any street, sidewalk, or other public property within 500 feet of a School or Day Care Center ".
LAMC 41.18 is in no way intended to criminalize people experiencing homelessness. Still, it empowers children to walk to school, the park, sporting events, and playdates without navigating homeless encampments.
Councilmember Katy Yaroslovsky is promoting a motion to make enforcement of LAMC 41.18 untenable. This will allow illegal homeless encampments back in our children's safe spaces. Yaroslovsky plans to take her motion to the City Council for approval soon, and we must push back.
We support leaving LAMC 41.18 "as is".
